Catering Products Direct have teamed up with our local radio station, Outreach Radio for our latest advertising campaign, which first aired in December 2020.
Outreach Radio is a new local community station that broadcasts on DAB Digital Radio to South Hampshire, the South Coast & the Isle of Wight.
The station was founded by former pirate radio engineer and DJ, Osman Sen-Chadun who built and operated independent ‘urban’ radio stations during the late 1980s to 1990s. Osman has experience of over twenty years working with UK broadcasters.
During the original lockdown in March 2020, Osman and his son, Onur established Lockdown FM, a zero revenue, voluntary radio station, under a temporary licence to help and support local communities during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Volunteers came forward to present programmes throughout the day and evening to be there for listeners during these unprecedented times. These volunteers have given up their time to work tirelessly to grow and build the radio station.
Lockdown’s radio licence was extended twice by Ofcom. This allowed them to broadcast continuously for nearly six months, until 5th September 2020. It was at this point that their licence expired with no further allowance for an extension. By this time, their coverage had reached out to Romsey, Eastleigh, Chandlers Ford, North Baddesley, Hedge End, and other surrounding areas.
Lockdown FM was only ever meant to be a temporary radio station. However, due to the overwhelming support received from its listeners, charities, voluntary groups, businesses and the local government, Osman set out to make the station an on-going service.
On 1st October 2020, OfCom granted a permanent them with a DAB Digital Radio licence, which meant that Lockdown FM could broadcast across the South of Hampshire, the South Coast and the Isle of Wight, a coverage area reaching 1.4 million people.
Their new DAB service began six weeks later, on 14th November 2020. This rapid turnaround allowed Lockdown FM to continue to support its local communities by providing their service across a much wider area which was now in the midst of the second Coronavirus lockdown.
Following the success of obtaining a permanent licence, Lockdown FM rebranded itself to Outreach Radio in November 2020. It was now broadcasting via DAB, FM and the internet.
Outreach Radio’s company constitution officially states, “The Company is not established or conducted for private gain: any surplus or assets are used principally for the benefit of the community.” All profits go straight back into enhancing Outreach Radio or other community projects.
